Its sunny, the sky is blue, its cold, its windy, it must be Silverstone! I was lucky enough to be invited to the Silverstone Classic Media Day. This is held in the International Paddock “Wing” building and gives “us media” a preview of what to expect in July.
The first thing I saw when entering the Paddock was a display of the original FIAT 500’s, such a tiny car and I still remember travelling 3-abreast on the back seat many years ago when I was an apprentice for the GPO! On entering Hall 03 I was delighted to see 250F [#2526] on display, the only other Maserati I saw was the Ghibli pace car, still I am sure there will be more at the Silverstone Classic, including our stunning club stand display.
We were treated to some on-track test sessions of over 150 historic competition cars from Austin A30/35’s through to F1 Arrows.
Another popular session was the media passenger rides when I’m sure the drivers took great delight in frightening the life out of the media.
There were also car displays providing photo opportunities.
Hopefully this preview really whets the appetite for the Silverstone Classic to be held 28/29/30 July with a busy schedule of Classic and Historic Motor Racing; live music [Bootleg Beatles Friday and Dire Straits Experience and Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley on Saturday] plus a Vintage Fun Fair and over 100 different Car Clubs, including ours, with over 10,000 Classic Cars on display. Our Club will have a Parade lap on the Sunday to celebrate the Club’s 45th anniversary. Another interesting statistic is there are over 1,000 race entries, surely there must be a few Maseratis amongst that lot!!! Another part of the event is the Shopping Village with over 150 shops and if this is not enough there is also an auction.
Details of this event, and how to get tickets, are available in the Newsletter and on our website The Silverstone Classic 2017
See you there.
