    Hi guys,

my GC has developing a knocking. It sounds like it’s coming from behind the driver side bulkhead but I’m not sure. It occurs when the car changes direction, even a little bit. Over a sleeping policeman- nothing. Down a bumpy country road it’s knocking almost constantly.

it makes no difference if I’m under drive, coasting, braking etc. Just an annoying knocking nearly all the time!

    any suggestions?

    Hi Stewart,

Could be so many things bushes worn out, loose or broken bolt.

You could start by bouncing each corner and see if it happens while stationary, another option is to take each wheel off and check individually.

Otherwise it will need to go to a mechanic, where are you based, there a good few indies in the south and around London.

    Hi Tony,

Thank you for coming back to me.  I’ve had the car in with a mechanic for 4 or 5 hours now.  All the wheels off, up on shaker plates to see if we can hear the knocking, crowbar everywhere we can try and create flex, bounced the car, shook the car….etc….etc….replaced the rear drop joints, greased the roll-bars, checked the suspension – nothing.

Bizarrely, if the car is cold,  it doesn’t make any noises (and is a dream to drive), as the car warms up….knocking starts (horrible place to be).

If you know of any specialists in North London area or Beds/Bucks please let me know.

    Thank you again,

    Stewart

Took the car to Kwik fit – they bounced it around – tightened up the under tray…..knocking stopped!!  Awesome. ?

    Hi guys,

sorry for the late reply.  Took the car to KwikFit – all sorted!  Apparently, the undertray was loose.  They tightened 6 or so bolts and voila,  the knocking has stopped. (See above).

One other thing I had was a squeaking from the front when the car got hot.  Sorted this by spraying grease into the rubber bushes/glands where the roll bar goes in.

Finally, I have a car that doesn’t annoy the back end out of me!

    Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for posting up. Great information for the archives.
Shows that not every noise is something to get really worried about.
