David Scrivens
ParticipantHi my name is David Scrivens and I have recently purchased a 2016 GT .I have read conflicting reports on which fuel is the correct one E5 or E10 ?Any advice would be much appreciated. Also has anyone any recommendations on a trickle charger for the same vehicle either a Maserati or an aftermarket one ?I am new to the brand so I am groping in the dark to some extent .Many thanks in anticipation

ParticipantI don’t even use E10 in my lawn mower, tried it but it became difficult to start. E10 has a lower calorific value than real petrol, I made a 200 mile trip in my Jag xk8 when this stupid idea was first introduced and found my fuel consumption increased by nearly 10%, tried it in my 71 Indy and it became almost impossible to start, now use E5, it is better but pure petrol was better. Alcohol has about 1/3 the calorific value of petrol and produces 30% less co2 ( or so they say) so you will suffer at least a 3% reduction in mileage using E10. I only use E5 and hope we can eventually get back to normality.

ParticipantI used E10 a while ago and it caused all sorts of problems. So avoid it ever since in all my cars.
There is no actual formal guidance when I looked at the time btw.28th September 2025 at 9:54 am #23765Mahesh Thomas
ParticipantI only use E5 and my preferred poison of choice is Shell V-power. In terms of trickle charger, I use CTek MXS 5.0, which ironically looks almost identical to the Maserati branded one but significantly cheaper.

KeymasterHi David,
I believe only GTs from 2018 – 2019 can safely use E10, it will have a sticker in the fuel cap if it can.
Best trickle charger and used by Bentley, Ferrari, Maserati etc.etc. is the CTEK MXS 5.0 at about £65, but do not get the the Maserati one as its the same thing but with a Maserati sticker on but costs £128 +VAT!
It can be safely used in the boot as low heat, it will check battery condition, recon battery, charge then drop to trickle charge.
It comes with croc clips and half a plug with cable that can be directly attached to the battery and reaches above the boot shelf so easy to plug in and out.

ParticipantI’ve been using the CTEK MXS 5.0 for years and have two. No problems at all, I keep them on a timer for a few hours a day.
I also use the non croc connectors that attach direct to the battery bolts permanently.
