I wondered if any other members have had issues with the RAC and Footman James Insurance?

I had a breakdown at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon in August. The RAC call centre was only able to accept online requests. The arrival time steadily increased from 5pm to 7pm and eventually between 10 and 11pm. I gave up and managed to find a local service to recover the car at a cost of £150.

The RAC and Footman James have both refused compensation. RAC has said there’s no regulator or Ombudsman to complain to.

Their website talks about 45 minute call outs and peace of mind but please be warned that the reality is very different. Both firms are really dismissive of customers in my experience.

    Has anyone else found this?

I stopped using RAC a while ago for a similar reason.
Sometimes even though you can’t get a good internet connection, at least the phone works so it is a real hassle.

I switched to Green Flag as they use local traders  & there will be someone nearer.

Also with RAC they would have deemed you as low priority so if someone else calls they will go higher up the list, so there is no guarantee on time. I know someone who waited over 6 hours.

It would have been 9 hours in my case, stuck on the verge of a busy dual carriageway. What shocked me was that the RAC said they only aim to recover, it isn’t a contractual right, and there is no recourse to an Ombudsman. Classic car owners may want to ponder on thst. However, I’m going to test that with the CMA and FOS (because it was an add on to an insurance policy) but you certainly need to aviid the RAC for a standalone recovery service.

9 hours is ridiculous what sort of service is that, sounds like give us your money and don’t call! & let’s bury the details in the small print.

Lets us know how you get on and best wishes on taking them on.
