The safest bet is to use ethanol free petrol in pre-2011 cars and unless I am mistaken here in parts of the UK that is only supplied by Esso. It has an octane rating of 99 and the pumps have a label E5 but that means up to 5% and if you consult Esso’s website they say it is ethanol free. The problem of course is that it is expensive but depending on the miles you do is cheaper than having to replace damaged fuel lines, catalytic converter etc.
