    I have a wedding to attend next August (2024) in Lecco, on Lake Como, Italy, and I am considering making some, hopefully, great memories by driving my low mileage, Maserati 3200 GT to the wedding, from the UK.

    I am planning to have at least a couple of overnight stops en-route to Lake Como – so I was wondering if anyone had experience of completing a similar trip, and could suggest some stunning roads to take, some scenic routes, places to stay overnight, and/or any web sites that might help with planning such a trip?

    Hi David I am currently in Florence having driven here last weekend from the UK in my 1972 Bora. I drove my daughter to the wedding venue in it. We are here for another week so will be happy to chat when back home in Blighty

    Hi David, Assuming you are taking the tunnel or the short sea crossing I’d head across northern France through Champagne and then down to Rouen which is Burgundy country, great area to stop if you like the wine.  Some years ago the Club stayed at a Relais Chateau hotel in Champagne called the Briquiterie which I’d recommend though any Relais et Chateau hotel is generally great but expensive.  From Burgundy you can then head over to the Mont Blanc tunnel into northern Italy.  If you want to stay somewhere nice en route from Burgundy to the tunnel then we ski at Megeve and stay at Les Fermes de Marie – great hotel!  Sorry I can’t be more precise.

    Good evening David, I have driven past Lake Como for many for many years on my way to Todi, in Umbria, not in my Maserati though. I do have a preferred route and stop offs.

    I concur with John b the Champagne region is a must, as is the Briquiterie. In fact we’re there in early July, this time with the Granturismo..

    Are you going to Silverstone this weekend? If so maybe we could catch up and chat. Unfortunately I am only there on Friday.

    I’ve just returned from a 1200 mile rally, driving from London ending up at Lake Como, Monte Carlo and Nice.

    A few of the cars overheated at one point it was 36 degrees. We were fine as I drove conservatively and had good breaks driving an average of 400 miles a day.

    It’s a fantastic drive and plenty of lovely scenery.

    Would be nice to travel through and stop off through the wine regions. I’ll have a look at your suggested route.

    Hi David,

    It was the Two Ball Banger Rally, we fixed up an 18 year old BMW X3. 54 cars took part, I’ll be at the NEC next.

    I’d recommend staying in Epernay which is the centre of Champagne country and a lovely town. About 3 hours from the tunnel.

    We did the same run in the opposite direction last year but did Como to Epernay in one hit. We went into Switzerland, over the Gotthard Pass and then into France. Depending on time you could explore some of the Alpine passes. The down side is that you need a (expensive) vignette for the Swiss motorways.
