    Hi,

    I am interested in understanding whether one can increase the life of the clutch through changing driving style? For example, does slipping to neutral whilst at rest reduce wear? Is it better to drive in ‘sport’ or ‘normal’ mode?

    I drive in sport all the time in my Gransport. There are numerous opinions on whether to go neutral or keep the foot on the brake in slow traffic.

    When I went from the auto 3200 I was told to use neutral as much as possible to reduce  wear. So that’s what I’ve been doing.

    I’ve not really driven enough in the last 18 months to see if if makes much difference to clutch wear. I’m planning to do more miles with the lockdown easing so I’ll compare although it’s very difficult to remember the road and traffic conditions all the time.

    Maurice, the GranSport has a manual gearbox with an electronically operated clutch. So if you stop at traffic lights or for any other reason your are “slipping the clutch”. It is better to shift into Neutral to avoid this excessive wear. As for the actual clutch operation there is a school of thought that thinks Sport Mode, with it’s quicker shift time reduces wear but this is probably marginal compared to selecting Neutral when stationary.

    Keith and Tony,

    Thank you both for your advice. It seems like shifting to neutral when stationery is a sensible way to go. As for driving in ‘sport’ mode all the time, it is true the shift is slightly quicker, but I also find it less smooth, which is why I tend to drive in ‘normal’ mode much of the time. My model is a standard cambiorcosca although the 2005 refresh.
