Maserati is one of the world’s most fascinating automobile companies, rich in tradition and sporting success.
The House of the Trident was born ninety years ago in Bologna. Right from the start it created innovative and winning vehicles, causing a stir in the automotive world.
Success came first in competition and later in road-going Gran Turismo cars. Maserati’s single-seaters dominated legendary races like the Indianapolis 500. They won the Formula 1 World Championship and were victorious in races around the world. The sports vehicles were peerless as the best drivers of the time had at their disposal a perfectly constructed chassis in the Maserati. The exploits of the Gran Turismo models left fans speechless and also attracted admirers who purchased the vehicles for their uniqueness.
These buyers were drawn to the handmade Maseratis which were specially tailored to their tastes.
Though Maserati has been successful, it has also endured some difficult times in its history. These trials have only served to strengthen the character of the company.
From a technological and human point of view, Maserati today is a highly sophisticated organisation. It is proud of its roots and history, while keeping faith with its innovative soul. Innovation is central to everything that Maserati does and to each car that it produces.
Celebrations took place over last weekend with cars following a route from Milan to Rome, stopping at the factory in Modena on the way. Owners, dealers, importers, journalists and sponsors from all over the world came together for driving tours celebrating Maserati’s rich heritage. Setting off from beautiful piazzas in Milan and Modena, a stream of classic and modern Maseratis made their way to Italy’s capital city where the historic streets were lined with applauding spectators.
Three groups of cars participated in this weekend's spectacular:
- '90 Years Of History': Ninety Maserati Spyder and Coupé models from the current range were especially decorated, each commemorating an important international event of the last 90 years. For example, the year 1969 is represented by man’s first landing on the moon.
- 'Classic Tour': Pre-1984 Maserati cars, which included some of the most memorable models in the history of the Trident marque.
- 'Celebrity Tour': An opportunity for owners of the later post-1984 Maseratis to join the event, from Modena to Rome at the wheel of their own car.
This special event could not have taken place without the kind support of Maserati’s key partners - a group of prestigious companies, each of them a leader in their own field and sharing the same core values as Maserati. The event sponsors were: Pirelli, Audemars Piguet, 3M and Barilla. The official suppliers were Ermenegildo Zegna, Cavalieri Hilton, Laurent-Perrier, Carrozzeria Campana and Mario Neri.
The programme was as follows:
Friday, 17 September: Cars from the 'Classic Tour' category arrived in Modena and visited the factory before driving to Mugello. Meanwhile in Milan, the '90 Years Of History' group of cars paraded across the city up to the Piazza del Duomo.
Saturday, 18 September: The 'Classic Tour' group competed in a regularity race at Mugello - the 90 Years Trofeo Maserati.
Meanwhile, the '90 Years Of History' cars coming from Milan stopped in Modena to visit the factory, where they were joined by the third group, the 'Celebrity Tour'. After lunch, all cars left for Rome where the Audemars Piguet gala dinner was held at Villa Miani. The launch of a limited edition watch which celebrates Maserati’s 90th anniversary was announced at this exclusive event.
Sunday, 19 September: All three groups’ cars took part in a grand parade through Rome, where the historic streets were lined with applauding spectators, before meeting up at the Colosseum. The event ended in the afternoon after lunch at the Villa Miani.
On the eve of its 90th Anniversary celebrations, Maserati has just announced an exclusive, limited edition Spyder.
The Spyder 90th Anniversary features an all-new Blue Anniversary livery. A grey profile has been added to frame the front headlight cluster, creating an appealing contrast and highlighting the front of the vehicle.
The new colour scheme brings out the dynamic character of this convertible. The external styling changes include a sports windscreen and doorsills adding to the high-performance feel. The Spyder 90th Anniversary is also fitted with two aerodynamic headrests in blue carbon wire, a feature that recalls the close links Maserati has always had with the racing world.
The classic red-and-chrome Trident takes pride of place in the centre of the chrome grille, itself resplendent against the blue livery. This symbol matched with the ‘ball-polished’ chrome door handles and the 19" rim wheels emphasises the natural gleam of the aluminium. The exterior look is completed by titanium coloured brake calipers and the distinctive oval logos on the front wings, a tribute to the 250F driven by Fangio in the 1957 F1 World Championship. The interior too has been given a special finish that complements the overall style. |
