Maserati Club - Goodwood Track Day 2005
Henry and Jan Barczynski's recent track day at Goodwood

"Dear Henry,
SCUDERIA SFERE GRANDI IMPROVE THE BREED
(with apologies to John Fitch and Charles N. Barnard *)
A brief report on the Maserati activity at Henry and Jan Barczynski's recent track day at Goodwood; (I understand Richard Taylor is working on something more extensive for Trident):
This was not a race or competition or timing day, more an opportunity to hone one's driving skills and learn the Goodwood circuit, with the aid of Roberto Giordanelli and two other instructors.
Scuderia Sfere Grandi fielded their entire stable: Reg Palmer's Biturbo Coupe, which he lovingly refers to as "my old heap". Reg surprised some of the other drivers who passengered him with the combination of his driving skills and the car's performance; he is now poised to log some fast times when he returns to Goodwood for a sprint meeting in the autumn.
Jan Barczynski's 450S Replica had to be the most attractive car on track, both to look at and to listen to.
A svelte black Shamal (driver as yet unidentified) used its V8 grunt to good effect - seemingly effortless acceleration!
The QP IV of Marios Kritikos looked surprisingly good on the track for a 4 door saloon.
The 3200 of Russell Wilcox recovered from an early scare when the dipstick seal failed and blew out some oil, to show grace and pace out on the circuit.
Other Maserati Club members out on track, but, for reasons good or bad, left their Masers at home, were: Scot Crane (BMW M3 CSL), Richard Taylor (Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2) and Henry McNeill (Mini Cooper).
Me? No I don't care to take my 222 4v on track, but I thoroughly enjoyed the day as a spectator.
Many thanks to Henry and Jan for hosting, Chris Darwin for managing and admin, the Goodwood Marshals for their services, Roberto and others for instruction, and the caterers for our fine lunch.
Best regards,
Roger Harrison.
PS: * In case you're wondering about "with Apologies to John Fitch and Charles N Barnard" they're the authors of an article entitled "The Day that Corvette Improved the Breed" in True magazine 1956, and reprinted in "Omnibus of Speed" published in 1961, which as a 12 year old I bought with my birthday money - and that's what got me hooked on fast cars and racing - although it was years before I saw any racing!"
Greetings Henry,
Reg's favourite moment from the track day at Goodwood.

He started behind that Ferrari!!
Regards,
Mad Plumb."
