LOTUS ELEVEN-MASERATI - Chassis #158  (by Victor Thomas)

This 1956 XI Series 1 Le Mans was the first built with a 1.5 litre Maserati 150S engine and gearbox by Fred Williamson for the owner Brian Naylor. The car was entered for 30 races in 1956 (which were mainly of international class) and amazingly it won 17 of these. This is probably a record for any single car in one season ever. Amongst the wins was the Leinster Trophy at Wicklow in Northern Ireland.

In 1957 the XI was bought by Tom and Ed Payne and a Coventry Climax engine was fitted. After a year's racing, including being turned upside down at Mallory Park, it was stored until 1960 and then rebuilt with a 1000cc Ford Cosworth 'Screamer' engine. Bought by the present owner in 1974, a Climax was then refitted.

The car has never been fully restored and retains its original 20 gauge chassis and body from 1956 (except for a new front panel, the original being modified to accept the Maserati engine.
