| Maseratis racing at the Ferrari 60th Meeting, Silverstone 2007 |

Peter Wood has once again sent us some excellent photos taken at the Ferrari 60th Birthday Meeting at Silverstone, on the 8/9/10th of June, 2007. The Meeting hosted the second round of the Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge, with many Maseratis taking part with great success.
"The first pole position to be assigned on the Friday was that for Group A, single-seaters with drum brakes. Top spot was taken by Stefan Schollwoeck in a 1932 Maserati 4CM. The German driver beat off the competition put up by Matt Grist’s Alfa Romeo Type B (P3) and the 6CM with Sean Danaher on board.
It was then the turn of the Group B vehicles to go for pole. This category is for cars with drum brakes. At the end of the session, two Maseratis occupied the front row with Irvine Laidlaw’s 250S and David Franklin’s 300S. Carlos Monteverde drove splendidly in his Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa to claim the third fastest time.
In Group C, reserved to cars with disc brakes, the focus was on the Prancing Horse vehicles. However, the only Maserati entrant, a fabulous Type 61 Birdcage driven by Carlos Voegele, was able to set the quickest time in its class.
Race 1 in Group A was held on Saturday morning and was won by Stefan Schollwoeck. On the opening two laps the German had to battle with Matt Grist and his Alfa Romeo Type B (P3) that had jumped into an early lead.
Schollwoeck’s 4CM was experiencing some trouble with the ignition but was still able to put pressure on the Alfa. On lap 3, Grist spun at Abbey, slipped four places and left the way clear for the Maseratis. Further down the field, Sean Danaher and Willi Balz were battling for second place, a spot that was eventually seized by Danaher.
"The Alfa started like a rocket and I had to immediately chase it", revealed Schollwoeck. "It really was moving and was also good under braking. In contrast, my engine was not producing all it could as I had some problems with the ignition. Despite the Alfa having 200 bhp more than I did, I stayed in touch and waited for the right moment, which duly came around".
Next onto the track were the Group C vehicles. In this event it was Irvine Laidlaw’s Ferrari 312 PB that stormed to victory, but only after having to catch a fast-starting 512 BB LM driven by Paul Knapfield. Laidlaw edged into the lead on lap two and held first place until the end. Knapfield claimed the runner-up position with third going to the Birdcage with… on board.
Maserati filled the top three places in the first Group B race.
Irvine Laidlaw's 250S dominated and was followed home by Marc Devis in a 250 SI and the 300S with David Franklin in the driving seat. Laidlaw was very direct in his post-race observations: "the car had a few problems with the ignition but I managed to stay in front. I have to say that the two drivers behind me were excellent". The first Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge competitors onto the track on Sunday were those in the second Group C race. It turned out to be a tough event, like the one on Saturday. In the second Group B race, Maserati again scooped the top three places. This time, however, third was occupied by Carlos Monteverde's Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa until a few laps from the end. Unfortunately for him, an error saw him drop two positions. Maserati were once more triumphant in Group A. Stefan Schollwoeck again took the win with Sean Danaher and Willi Balz coming next. Schollwoeck's win was never in doubt while Willi Balz fought hard but in vain to overhaul Danaher. The Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge will be at Le Mans from 6-8 July, and the Trident drivers will be out to repeat their success."
