| The International Maserati Rally - Goodwood October 1st to 4th. |
 |
Over 100 classic Maseratis from seven different countries gathered for the recent International Rally, hosted by The Maserati Club UK. Based at the Goodwood Hotel, on Thursday October 1st the car park was transformed into a Maserati collectors dream.
The first day of the event was at the Goodwood circuit, a track day for classic road cars and a few racers, suitably silenced - The gorgeous 200Si and A6G Zagato Coupe from the collection of Gordon McCulloch, Drummond Bone’s Barchetta, for once the only one on the event and Steve Hart with the Camoradi Streamliner Birdcage. From Holland, Michael Boertien brought his first series Ghibli Open Cup racer, and proceeded to give the Birdcage a run for its money.
Amongst the Boras and Ghiblis, a modified German Shamal delighted the spectators and the few moderns on the event – a mixture of 3200, 4200 and GranSport also enjoyed various hot laps.
After a day at the races, dinner that evening was aboard the atmospheric HMS Warrior in Portsmouth harbour. A riotous affair, culminating in a few rounds of ‘What shall we do with the drunken Sailor’ in the coaches on the return journey.
The next day, a road route through the beautiful South Downs countryside took all participants through Steyning and Lewes on to their lunchtime destination of Glyndebourne, which took place in the sublime surroundings of the Middle and Over Wallop restaurant. After an afternoon looking round Arundel Castle and the like, guests congregated that evening for a reception and magnificent dinner at Goodwood House. And if drifting amongst the Canalettos with Champagne in hand was not enough, there was a surprise special guest outside – the new Maserati GranCabrio. This car, finished in metallic grey with a cream interior and a burgundy hood, is at the moment the only example in the world and we are indebted to Maserati GB for making this possible.
On the final day, participants drove the hillclimb course outside Goodwood House before parking in front of the house while the Concours D’Elegance took place. This was split into four classes and the winners for each were: Class 1 – Stephen Dowling with his majestic 5000GT Allemano. Class 2 - Frits Harms from The Netherlands with his Khamsin. Class 3 – Roberto Ricciardello with a menacing black Shamal. Class 4 – Richard Brooks from Guernsey with a GranSport Spyder. The Concours judges included Tony Willis and Silvia Pini from Maserati GB, Peter Collins from Auto Italia magazine and Louisa Skipper from Motor Sport magazine.
While the judges deliberated, another selection of mouth watering racing Maseratis and OSCAs made various ascents of the hillclimb, to the delight of the rally entrants and also many club members and spectators who had joined us just for the day. The racers included Nick Mason, with his Tipo 60 Birdcage, Anthony Hartley, who brought not only his Tipo 26 but also his incredible recreation of the 1929 Maserati V4, the 16 cylinder behemoth and Roger Earl with his OSCA Mt4. Last but by no means least, our special guest Sir Stirling Moss drove his OSCA on the hill and afterwards answered questions and signed autographs for many of his fans!
After a photo shoot of all cars outside the famous house by the official event photographer, Michael Ward of Auto Italia magazine, the entrants returned to the Goodwood Hotel for a farewell lunch and prize giving.
The overall winners of the event were the Sicilian father and son team of Roberto and Antonino Ricciardello in their black Shamal. Sir Stirling Moss presented them with their award, a presentation case mounted version of the CMC Maserati Birdcage.
UK club president, Alexander Fyshe then thanked the organisers of the event, UK club members Derek Mills, Brian Harris, Roger Epsztajn, Andy Heywood, Michael O’Shea, Adam Painter, Bill Jackson and Keith Davies.
A full account of this event will be published in the winter edition of the club magazine, Trident.
The Maserati International Rallies take place annually, in a different European Country. Next year it is the turn of the Swedish Maserati Club. Watch this website for details. |
